I just bought a used side by side. The seller and his partner buy and sell lots of atv's and side by sides. They told me they currently have over 200K in inventory at their house and I confirmed this by looking at his craigslist adds. He put his name on the bill of sale but had the cashiers check made out to his partner, anything fishy about that? I looked the guy up and he has a few charges and he has a mug shot. I looked up the property listed and he does live there, but neither partner is the owner of the property. It's plausible he's renting , but also seems odd that he could afford that much in inventory but rents. I looked up the VIN# of the side by side and it's clean, he also gave us the title from a previous owner, so i'm not worried about it being hot. What my main concern is I think there is a lot of tax evasion going on. Don't get me wrong I see no need for small occasional sellers of used stuff to report sales tax especially when most people take a loss on vehicles they bought and sell a few years later but when you buy ans sell right away making a profit and it's pretty much his main job as far as I can tell I think you should have to register as a dealer and pay sales tax. It's not fair to other dealerships in the area or other tax payers. I think of the operation as almost being an unregistered used car dealership. I live in a state that doesn't title off road vehicles so he is probably able to avoid being detected from that. Is this legal? Should I blow a whistle, the state has anonymous reporting on their website?
