Polaris Sportsman 90cc

I just purchased a Polaris sportsman 90. The guy said it’s around an 05 model. It’s a 2 stroke. The battery was dead so we had to kick start it a few times to get it to fire up. It ran good and switched through forward to neutral to reverse and all worked good. I get it to the house and it takes me about 5 minutes to crank it. I put it in forward and my son and I ride it for about 15 min with no problems. I stop and get off and tell my son to switch it to reverse and as soon as he pulls the lever out, it shuts off. It takes me about 10 min to get it cranked back up and the last 2 kicks before it started, I could hear what sounded like gears grinding. It ran and idled great. I switched it from Neutral to reverse to let my son drive it backwards a few minutes and worked fine. As soon as I went to pull the lever out to move it to the forward position, it died. Has anyone had these problems or know what it might be?

Questions about the 99 Xplorer 400 4×4

Hi all, I recently picked up a 99 Xplorer 400 4x4 for a few hundred bucks due to the amount of work it needs. Overall it seems to be in good shape with nothing bent, minimal rust, plastics are good, etc. The main issue is that it won't go into gear. I've read on here and other forums about the multiple reasons that can happen and have a list going of things to start looking into. There are a few things about this model that I'm not clear on and searching the forums and repair manuals haven't cleared it up for me.

#1 - I don't see a radiator or fan. I have seen some references to the 400 and the 400L. Am I right in assuming that the 400L is Liquid Cooled and the 400 is Air Cooled? If correct and mine is Air Cooled, am I missing a fan? I do see a two wire plug hanging from the top near where I would expect a fan to be located.

#2 - The air vent tube going into the clutch is very lose and I've seen where there is a coupler in the manual and I'll see if I can find that part. The other end of that air vent just curves down and is open. That seems like it has the potential to let in a lot of dirt/dust. Is there supposed to be some sort of air filter there?

#3 - The engine fires up immediately and runs strong. I have noticed that I get a few large drops of oil right under where the exhaust pipe connects to the exhaust manifold. I've only had 4 stroke ATVs in the past. Is this typical of a 2 stroke?

#4 - At the front of the engine I see a hole that looks like where a radiator hose or maybe an air filter might connect. I attached a picture of it. What am I missing there? Maybe my engine is liquid cooled and a previous owner removed the whole system?

Talk to me about log splitters

OK. First, I don't have the time nor the knowledge of hydraulics to tackle building my own splitter. While that would be a fun project, it's not something I want to tackle right now.

With that said, I'm in the market for a gas powered towable splitter so I don't have to rent one any more. We have a log cabin in the mountains, a fire ring in the yard, and a small fire place that I'd like to keep up with and hand splitting just doesn't appeal to me anymore. Also plan on adding a wood stove to the shop eventually.

I really only have rental experience with a horizontal splitter of unknown tonnage/make/etc. as it's an old workhorse that really does well in just about any wood we've thrown at it. from gnarly knotted cherry, maple, etc. to large rounds of spruce, fir, etc..

we have a large number of trees on our property, mainly fir, but some maple and fruit trees as well. plus we have access to other wood sources as my father manages private land for logging for a living and other family connections as well. So I need something that has the gumption to handle just about anything we could throw at it.

Experience and suggestions are welcome. I've got no biases or brand requirements. 4 way splitting ability would be a big plus, but not required.

I'd like to keep it under $2000 if possible but could be convinced to go more if the model/options are worth the cost.

2019 Sportsman 450

I have a 2019 Sportsman 450 and I trying to find a wrap for the plastics only thing I can find is for 2017 sportsman 450 is there anything different on the plastics and they way they are shaped on the 2017 vs 2019. I know the 2017 has a round speedometer and the 2019 has the square digital display which I do t think would be that big of a deal there. Or if anyone knows a company that sells the wrap for the 2019 that’s would be great Thanks
