2015 Sportsman 1000 Touring
Condition: Intermittent no start. Charge battery and it is OK for a while. Sometimes it will go weeks especially if run long afer start. Occasionally it would start, idle for warmup, drive 1/4 mile shut down and no restart. Charging system tests fine. Parasitic load test OK but with a catch.
I noticed at key off my Power Commander remained energized. Watched it and found that at around 20 minutes it timed out and shut down. Removing either the fuel pump fuse, EFI fuse, EFI relay or unplugging the ECM shut down the draw until next key on when it repeated.
During this period the draw was approx. 80-90ma. I found with my Amp Hound that 8ma was from the fuel pump circuit and 70-80 was on the EFI circuit. I went through plug by plug trying to shed the load. Unplugging the fuel pump made no difference. If memory serves I found that 20 ma was the PC-V and 40ma was the IAC with a 20ma base load that I never found.
My battery is suspect. I have replaced it with the 30ah unit that these things really should come with. I'm thinking that I'll be fine now, but I wonder about that 20 minute retained load? Is this just normal or is there something in my ECM that is staying alive for that time?
