2004 Outlander Electrical/charging issues
hi all
have a 2004 outty 400 max. last year it went dead. boosted it, and after a few minutes of riding it was backfiring and dying again. it had been on its original battery so i started there before i went to diagnosing.
sooo, it has a new starter, new battery. still would go dead after a bit of riding. so this led me to believe my stator was not charging the battery, and the bike was running on battery power until the juice stopped flowing. so last winter i took the engine out of the bike, and redid everything i could on the engine as well, new plug, air filter (unrelated to electrical) did the valves etc. put a stator in it, everything back together and all seemed well. ran fine in the spring, but did not do much riding. come back to the bike couple weeks ago, and again, dead battery after a bit of riding.
voltage regulator toast? i assumed that if the regulator/rectifier was gone, it would likely have boiled the battery, which could have caused the original battery to so south, and i took my new battery in to make sure it was still good, and it tested absolutely fine. i did see a video on an older honda bike where they said the a regulator thats gone will prevent the bike from charging, i assume this is a universal case to all makes and models..
i will not be able to take it into a dealership, just not in my budget, so im looking for helpful info. i could find a multimeter and start testing new stator, old regulator and see what is going on, but i have not yet found a video or text to tell me the proper way to test everything that i need to test.
any info would be muchly appreciated.
2 side notes. looking for confirmation about the kill switch.. heard of lots of guys saying when they park it at home or wherever and are leaving the key in it they just use the killswitch. on my bike, the killswitch will stop the engine, but all other electrical stays on, which will result in a dead battery. what is the situation on a 2004 outty? should it work that way or should it shut off everything?
second side note.. would a speed sensor thats toast cause my speedo to rest at 30 while its idling? i know for sure that bike wont actually do the 115kph that the speedo says :th_smiliewoo:
again thanks for any help.

Seat is ripped 2018 xmr
So my 2018 xmr 850 has a ripped seat, it ripped on the back left side, seems like a hard piece of plastic from the seat rubbed through enough to cut it about an inch or so... do you think can can would warranty this as a defective seat ? Cause that’s kinda bs i only ride it a hand full of times... my old 97 Polaris hasnt even ripped its seat and this does after 2 months
Read storage.
Hi guys i just purchased my first atv. Polaris 570 base model. Love it. Plan on camping, hunting, and ice fishing with it. What's a good read storage box for these machines? I've seen a lot of types and brands but can't narrow it down. Most give hardware to mount on round racks. Thanks.
New issue after installing half doors
Well I finally saved enough $$ to purchase the half doors. Installed them today. Pretty big install with so many parts. Doors look great! Love them!
But this new problem never occurred to me until today when I loaded up my Defender onto the trailer(6×12)to head out for a drive: Because of the railing on my trailer, I can't open the door to get out! lol
I couldn't believe it! I just sat there trying to figure out what to do. I only need another inch to clear the railing.
2 solutions I suppose. Find a welder friend to cut and lower the railing on the driver side. Really hate to do that. Or add some height to the trailer flooring, ie, plywood..etc.

Rear Gear set movement
Wondering if the movement of the rear gear set is normal. When I take off you can see it move a bit within the bolts that hold it in place.
Is there replaceable bushings there? I had a look at the polaris parts page but it only lists bolts. Are these supposed to be tight.
I am trying to tighten up the old 11 850xp, there are a few clunks and groans around this quad. Thanks all!

No Grease on CV axle?
So I bought grease tool for front and back wheel bearings to do my 2017 570 and sons 2017 450 HO at 240 miles on both. Did mine last weekend and did his today. Front drivers side cv axle had zero grease. Bone dry, not just none left, it was never greased. Picture taken shows what looks to be metal overheated and burnt. Unacceptable! Anyone that has a fairly new machine or has been meaning to grease bearings better get after it, bearings took a lot of grease.
Steering post upper bushing
2003 polaris sportsman 500 ho
Does anyone know the diameter of the steering shaft. I need to replace the upper bushing, in the event the dealership doesn’t have the part or it’s too expensive I know there are a slew of bushing to choose from for sway bars at the parts store. I saw someone on the scrambler pages use a jeep sway bar bushing. Any direction would help. Thanks.
