Weird question about my 2012 Polaris Sportsman 500HO.
When I turn the key it sometimes starts, but most times all I get is the starter clicking with a whirring sound at the starter.
I have power at the positive on the solenoid (direct from the battery). I disconnected the cable from solenoid to starter so there was no resistance for some tests. When key is turned you can hear the solenoid click. I also used a test light, there is power from the key to the starter. Power also goes to the output for the starter from the solenoid. (Solid light on test light). However..... when I hook up the cable to the starter, and and add that resistance then turn the key, the starter clicks, the light is now very faint on the solenoid at the cable to the starter.
I assumed it was starter. I removed the starter and took it to a shop for test and rebuild. They took it apart cleaned it, bench tested and all works great. I re-installed the starter and am having the same issue. When the starter was out, I looked and the flywheel on the engine portion, it looked clean and there were no rounded or broken teeth or anything noticeable.
So I know it is not the starter, I assume it is not the solenoid (unless it is possible that the solenoid is failing with any resistance?)
I even tried boosting with battery charger, thinking maybe the battery isn’t charged enough? Same thing with a boost. I charged the battery overnight (2amp) and no change. I tried another battery (it is unknown condition) but it does the same thing.
I will take the batteries in today to get them checked, as maybe neither are good?
Any other ideas???
This is frustrating, especially since the quad has no pull start for a backup
