Hi everybody, I am looking for some insight and a second opinion before i dive in ordering parts and trouble shooting. Looking for the clutch gurus on here. I have searched but cannot find a thread with my issue.
I have a 2008 sportsman 500 HO with the non-EBS clutches. The quad has been neglected for the last few years and used mostly for snow plowing and hauling firewood by my father. For a long time there has been an issue with the clutches where they would slip as the secondary would start to shift, but for his use he never noticed/cared.
Now I have the quad and have been giving it the TLC it deserves. I found the buttons in the secondary to be completely toasted so those have been replaced along with the proper EPI clutch kit to turn the new 27" tires.
The quad felt pretty good driving around the block but when i took it out for a real ride it slips like crazy! Engagement is around 2000rpm when watching the clutches in neutral but the quad isnt going anywhere until 4000 rpm in low or high range on the trail. Once the secondary starts to shift everything feels right and there is no more slipping. Taking off feels like im slipping the clutching trying to start in 5th gear on a motorcycle. Nothing seems to be binding in the clutches. Motor mounts are good.
The belt deflection seems way too loose even with only one shim in the secondary, can almost pinch the belt together. The clutch center to center seems fine at 10". Also the engine braking seems much stronger than I would expect now.
The primary seems pretty grooved just above where the belt rides, right now I suspect this could be the issue but I do not want to go and buy a new primary if it isnt going to fix this.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated because I am running out of ideas!
