Hey guys, I bought a 2018 sportsman 850 SP touring model a couple weeks back and just took it out for it's first real adventure this weekend. Both the wife and I had a great time and were extremely happy with how it performed. However with both of us on board, the machine was riding pretty low.
I weigh 280, and my wife is about 170 so we're definitely shy of the 575 lbs max capacity (I know that figure includes fuel, winch, etc) but we plan to take our sportsman out camping with us in the warmer months, loading it up with potentially another 100 lbs and it'd be nice to have some of that ground clearance back. I've been researching the subject and it sounds like my best bet is to install the highlifter HD springs, and I know that the max capacity isn't just about clearance or when components start breaking, but general ride safety, and I had a few questions before I purchase anything.
- will the springs alone regain me some clearance, or will I also need new shocks? How much might I expect?
- how harsh will they make the ride when it's just me riding? (which will be about 50% of the time)
- will any other components need upgrading?
I'm not looking to be able to carry a half ton with me, but I'd like to be able to load it with up to ~700 lbs of rider, gas, gear, etc without bottoming out.
Thanks very much.
