2002 Sportsman 700 twin-sputters and dies in gear

Hello - first time poster here. I have a 2002 Sportsman 700 twin that has about 3k miles on it and I've had it for just over a year now. I bought it for plowing and a little bit of hunting usage mixed in - so I don't use it a lot. This summer I have been starting it every couple weeks and riding it a few miles to make sure everything is still working and battery is in good shape. Well now of course that the snow season is near, the thing has been giving me issues. It will start and idle just fine, but when I throw it into gear and start driving, it starts to sputter and dies. I can keep it running if I pin the throttle and keep feathering the throttle and give it a lot of gas. I'm thinking it might be a failing needle float valve in the carb. I'm going to get a carb kit and hope that fixes it. Do you think I am on the right track?
