Long story.... bought an ‘09 550 xp from my original owner brother. He neglected the wheeler when it came to maintenance then let it sit for two years. This past winter I completely tore it down. It needed a lot of time and small parts put into but definitely worth the little cash amount I have into it.
Only problem I have is when 2wd is selected it has good manners until I go to spin the rear tires.... all four want to spin. There’s never any hesitation, it just does a 4wd launch. When 4wd drive is selected it has typical 4wd manners, hard to steer etc.
I completely understand how the front diff works, I rebuilt it with all new bearings, seals, sprague, etc. I removed the downhill brake clutches since they were toast and left in the cage that surrounded them to support the diff. The clutches could not be purchased at the dealer, dealer said I needed to buy as a whole unit, $1500. No thanks
I have replaced the fluid once after rebuild initial fill up to clear any break in contaminants and removed and inspected the diff for possible broken spring clips on the new sprague. Diff looks just fine. I have also tested the diffs magnets, checked voltage with switch in 2wd and 4wd, annnnd unplugged the diff harness just Incase. I still never get true 2wd.
