Polaris (Was told 1994) 400 explorer does not keep 4×4 engaged in reverse

We bought an older Polaris 400 from a guy on craigslist. He told us it was 1994 but didnt have any paperwork with it so he wasnt sure.

We test drove it up and down some of the paths we have. We checked that the 4x4 worked...it did (in forward but we didnt think to check in reverse).

Any way we got a plow for it to do our driveway and some of our private road. It really flies down the road even pushing 6" of snow. The issue was when i pushed the snow into a pile and tried to back up...i just started spinning.

We got it back to the garage, jacked up the front end and took a look at it.

From what I can tell, the CV shafts are always powered, and the hubs only engage when you push the (on demand) 4x4 button. The hubs lick almost immediately for forward. When we try to shift into reverse from FWD or N in high, the front wheels do not continue to turn. Even if we put it in reverse then engage the 4x4 the front hubs do not engage.

can anybody offer any suggestions?

Gear Indicator issues

Hey guys, I've got an 06 outlander 800 that I just purchased used and I'm having issues with the display not showing neutral. It sometimes flashes (N) but usually shows (H) or (R) even though the transmission is definitly in neutral. I've cleaned all 4 gearbox connector forks and the problem is still there. It's pretty annoying to have to hold the brake every time I want to start it. Speed sensor had a decent amount of shavings on it when I cleaned that as well so wondered if the three gear positioning sensors on the gearbox can be removed as well and cleaned? Maybe they got shavings on them as well? Any input would be great as I'm stumped. Thanks

New guy Getting a 570

Hey everyone, checking in and have a few questions. I'm picking up a 2017 570 L tomorrow. I'm gonna throw a ski plate on it. Not a ton of info on these since the 570s are fairly new. But what are the must do things with these outtys? As far as the frames, I know early G2s had a few issues, is that all figured out by now? Thanks guys!

Help!!! Mouse nest in my air box

My outlander 800 wasn?t running right at high rpm, it just spudders above half throttle. I took the airbox cover off and found a mouse had made a nest of fiberglass insulation in there I cleaned it all out and blew off the filter and it still has the same issue. I removed the throttled body and clean it. It wasent very dirty though.

in need of information

Hello all, So yesterday I sold my 07 Grizzly 700:crying... I did lots to make it how I liked it and I did like it. But now I start a new chapter in my life. I will need a 2up machine and I am drawn toward the XMR but I have been told more than once that it is not a trail rig. I ride hard, fast almost all trails not much mud. I have spent much time trying to figure out which machine is best suited for me and it seems to come back to the XT-P, but I still want the XMR..... Can someone please enlighten me as to why the xmr isn't a good trail rig? Thanks!
