Hey all, Name is Dereck Connors, I live in Downeast Maine and Started riding 3 years ago when I bought my first ATV at age of 42. I ride a 1992 Sportsman 500 and have a blast taking that machine places most only see in pictures.
I am in love with the 96 as you all most know it’s the first Year of the Sportsman 500 and I have decided to ramp up the Machine a little with some aftermarket parts. Most of my riding is slow doing a lot of woods riding and trail blazing, but I like to be able to get out of situations quickly and tease the kids with the 2x4s thinking my old machine won’t keep up. I have gone completely through it as far as suspension, breaks, fluids, LED lights, blah blah. I know most like the machine because it’s quite, I am fortunate enough to have thousands of acres to ride here without worry of noise, so I finally bought a cheep slip on exhaust will be here Monday. I went with the DG
RCM II Slip-On Muffler and it will be interesting to see if I need a jet kit. I ordered it through Dennis Kirk and couldn’t find a complete pipe to fit my machine. So any ideas I welcome, but I think That will be for another post.
For a living I do Social media work for coming companies as a content creator with Video and my newest personal venture is to be doing Video of ATV deep woods hunting and Fishing, well enough about me. See you all around the forum

I’m wanting to change things and make my outy look nice.. I have seen a lot of nice wraps on bikes up in Canada, via videos/pictures and I’d like to hook mine up with a nice wrap to help set off its look. Problem is I can’t find any wraps except Camo.. I don’t want Camo.. any places I can look into? Also any cool ideas or pictures of your wrap, if you have one, would be cool to see.
I was thinking a digi Camo (maybe yellow? Never seen it before) would be cool, or white with some blue/grey or blue/black accents or something like that. Then get my racks and stuff powder coated to go along with it.

Getting ready for an ice fishing trip this weekend and will be hauling a small utility trailer full of ice gear and guys on the lake. Less than 50lbs on the tongue and ~1000lbs (trailer fully loaded)

Any negative affects on the bike using the Green training key vs. the Gray performance key when towing a trailer in 4wd low?

maybe an option of Manual to automatic.

I would like to see more torque and power to AWD systems. seems the front never spins as fast nor delivers as much power as the rear.

As far as looks, i think the new ones look awesome!!!

Maybe a AWD system to hit on the fly instead of stopping and switching it.

gearing seems perfect as is


other than that....not much i would change. reliability seems to be there already.

On my sportsman 335 i am getting about 23.5 24 ohm of resistance is that enough? The problem i am having is i only have 3 wheel drive. On the side that is not engaging the coil is grabbing the armature plate but i can spin with my hand(their is a little resistance). Does this mean the coil is weak? Does anyone know where the best deal is too get one? thank you for all the help

Just wanted to send out a quick intro as I'm new to the forum. I just purchased my first ATV - 2004 Sportsman 400, and am excited to start getting after it. It hasn't been used much over the past few years, but it starts and runs - all be it a little rough. I'll be doing some routine maintenance on it (changing the oil, transmission/gear case fluid, spark plug, fuel & air filters, etc) to get it freshened up, and as I dig into it I'm sure I'll be looking for some help/advice.
I live in Minnesota and plan to use it on the frozen lakes this winter and then on the trails in the summer. I'm interested in riding locations/opportunities, particularly around the West Metro area.

Anyone experience issues with the top cover not staying latched towards the front? I have a ‘18 Rene XMR and the front clips seem to not work very well and they pop up after I start riding after a few minutes. Thank you!

So a little backstory on how I ended up here with my 2008 Sportsman 500 HO EFI.

I made the jump and bought a brand new wiring harness for a stupid amount of money because I was tired of hunting and fixing broken/chaffed/cracked wires, and seeing how I mainly use this thing for snow plowing, I didn't want to be chasing these things in the winter. Tearing things apart under a carport in the snow and wind is not ideal (not having a garage sucks for sure).

Taking my time uninstalling the old wiring harness and taking pictures along the way was pretty straight forward. Installation was also easy, following somewhat the same route installing the harness. Just take your time and double check along the way. Issues start to begin shortly after.

The first real snowfall of the season I was excited to do some plowing. I did some test runs and everything was checking out fine. No blink codes, idle was perfect, all in all she was running like a champ. Fast forward a few days while it sat there waiting for another snowfall. I should mention I did start it just to keep things moving as it got cold and icy, nothing extreme though.

While I was at work, my GF wanted to do some plowing so I didn't have to when I got home. She knows what shes doing, shes done this many times before, but she sent me a text saying its not running right. F me, here we go again. I get home and mess with it a little, it got dark out so I waited for my day off. It's def not running right. Pulled the blink codes and this is what I have:

• 12 - BEGIN SEQUENCE
• 41 - Air Temp Sensor Low Voltage / High Voltage
• 47 - IAC Stepper Motor: Open Load / Short-to-Ground
• 55 - MIL Circuit: Open Load/Short-to-Ground // Shorted Load/Short-to-Battery
• 56 - Fuel Pump: Open Load/Short-to-Ground // Shorted Load/Short-to-Battery
• 58 - Fan Circuit: Open Load/Short-to-Ground // Shorted Load/Short-to-Battery
• 61 - END SEQUENCE

So now I am trying to figures these out, under a carport, in the snow, in the wind. There seems to be short somewhere but I have no idea where.

Other than hand warmers and a reverse override mod everything else is cut/splice free. I've disconnected both along with a volt meter I have and same blink codes appear. What could cause this with a new harness? Corrosion? I'm at a loss right now and it sucks.

Any help, thoughts, suggestions, ideas etc would be appreciated. Thank you for reading this long thread.
